Betty Bacharach Home
The Betty Bacharach Home for Afflicted Children was founded in 1924, when it opened its doors to 6 sick children – who were the first of over 3000 to come through the doors of the Betty Bacharach Home. While these children were treated for their illnesses (which varied from tuberculosis to arthritis), they still received the average schooling of other children and even learned to weave, knit, paint, and sew.
Today, what used to be the Betty Bacharach Home for Afflicted Children is now home to Longport Borough Hall, Longport Police Department, and Longport Public Library. Longport’s first Borough Hall was built in 1890, and moved to the Coast Guard Building (AKA Longport Historical Museum) in 1944.
